Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Mtskheta

Serving as the administrative hub of the region, Mtskheta is not only Georgia’s oldest capital but also a living museum of history and faith. Traces of human settlement here stretch far back into antiquity, and it was in Mtskheta that Georgia embraced Christianity in the early 4th century CE. The country’s very first Orthodox church rose on this soil, while sacred landmarks such as Jvari Monastery, Samtavro Monastery, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral have earned their place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Dusheti

Dusheti, the largest municipality in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, is a tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Among its most treasured monuments are the 16th–18th century Ananuri Fortress Complex, Bodorna Church, and Mchadijvari Church. The Dusheti Historical Museum safeguards a wealth of artifacts that tell the story of the region’s past.

Yet Dusheti is as rich in nature as it is in heritage. The striking Abudelauri and Bazaleti Lakes shimmer in its highlands, while the four branches of the Aragvi River – the White (Mtiuleti), Black (Gudamakari), Khevsureti, and Pshavi Aragvi – carve dramatic valleys through its landscapes. Pshav-Khevsureti National Park offers wild scenery dotted with the Roshka Rocks, Tanie Lake, and remote medieval villages such as Shatili, Mutso, Ardoti, and Khakhabo, each echoing Georgia’s proud mountain traditions.

Tianeti

Crossed by the Iori River, Tianeti is famed for its serene Sioni Reservoir, a summertime favorite among Georgian travelers. History lovers can explore the Tianeti Local Museum, where finds from the Bronze Age to the late Middle Ages reveal the area’s deep cultural roots. A standout attraction is the mysterious Bochorma Fortress Complex, believed to date back at least to the 10th century.

The journey itself to Tianeti is unforgettable: the road from Tbilisi winds through the enchanting Sabaduri Forest. In winter, snow transforms the trees into sparkling tunnels, creating one of Georgia’s most magical drives.

Kazbegi

High in Georgia’s northern mountains, Kazbegi ranks among the country’s most beloved destinations, rivaling Tbilisi and Batumi in popularity. Its landscape is nothing short of breathtaking – snow-draped peaks of the Caucasus, the dramatic cliffs of Dariali Gorge, the rolling valleys of Truso, Arkhmo, and Khada, and countless rivers, lakes, and waterfalls create an endlessly photogenic backdrop.

Highlights include Stepantsminda, the heart of the region; the charming villages of Sno and Juta – the latter among the highest inhabited places in the Caucasus; and Gudauri, Georgia’s premier ski resort during the winter season.

Kazbegi also brims with history, boasting more than fifty monuments, from churches to ancient cave dwellings. Its crown jewel is the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church, perched against the towering silhouette of Mount Kazbegi (Mkinvartsveri, 5054 m) – one of the most iconic sights in all of Georgia.
